After PowerFLOW simulations, funky Peugeot Sport racecar sets world record time at Pikes Peak

Exa PowerFLOW aerodynamic simulation of Peugeot Sport's winning 208 T16 Pikes Peak racecar. PowerFLOW helped Peugeot Sport achieve maximum downforce to win the race with a world record time of just over 8 min.

 

 

 

 

Peugeot Sport's 208 T16 Pikes Peak racecar set a new world record of 8:13.878 min. at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race in Colorado on June 30. The racecar was optimized for maximum downforce solely using Exa Corp.'s PowerFLOW aerodynamic simulations.

The Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak racecar was expected to do well, but it beat all expectations on the 12.4-mile course that includes more than 156 turns and climbs some 4,700 ft from start to finish. Bruno Famin, director of Peugeot Sport, remarked, "We smashed the previous world record by a minute and a half -- a simply remarkable accomplishment."

"We knew PowerFLOW would accurately simulate the real world, and our driver, Sebastien Loeb, confirmed the car stuck to the road like a F1 racecar throughout the entire climb," said Famin. "We achieved the needed downforce to keep our driver safely on the road during this incredibly taxing race."

Peugeot Sport designed an extremely unique and efficient car. Although the trademark rear wing and front splitter looked a little disproportionate, they were optimized aerodynamic devices.

"Due to timing constraints, we had no hope to develop a prototype and be able to complete some wind tunnel testing," said Famin. "Based on our previous experience with PowerFLOW, acquired during the 908 Race campaign, we decided to fully rely on simulation for this aerodynamic development. The first track test results confirmed that we made the right choice."

"Within only a few weeks, Peugeot Sport's team managed to optimize all the aerodynamic components as well as the underbody of the car using our PowerFLOW simulations," said Jean-Paul Roux, Exa's president of European Operations. "Knowing this team and the potential for creativity in this 'Unlimited' class, I had high expectations that the car would be a winner, but to blow away the record and pull off such a commanding win is fantastic."

The second-place finisher came in at 9:02.19 min., almost 50 sec behind. Many race experts feel that this dominant Peugeot engineering team might be able to approach the 7-min. mark in the future.

Peugeot has not raced Pikes Peak since Robby Unser drove their car in 1989.
